Process Overview: To save our customers money when shipping multi-piece small-pack shipments, Advantus bands cartons together when possible and when allowable by the customer. Doing so decreases the number of billable packages while keeping the packages together at the same time. The following process and associated guidelines should be used when banding cartons.
Carton Banding/Strapping Do’s:
- Check to ensure the customer allows banding.
- Band/Strap cartons that are the same size.
- Straps should be tight and secure to the cartons.
- Strap cartons a minimum of twice in each direction up to a maximum of 4 straps in each direction to avoid cartons coming apart in transit.
Carton Banding/Strapping Don’ts:
- Do not bundle hazardous materials.
- Never band/strap cartons that are different in size.
- Never band cartons that will create a weight of 40 lbs or greater.
- Do not band cartons if they create an oversize package:
- Carton cannot exceed an oversize package limit of 130 inches in length and girth combined. A carton is oversize if it measures 130 inches in combined length (the largest dimension of a package) and girth (2 times the sum of the other two dimensions of the package). So if a bundle is 40” x 30” x 10”, the length plus the girth is calculated as follows- (40” + 2 X (30”+10”)) which is a total of 120. In this example, it would not be oversize.
- Any carton whose second-largest side is 36” or longer is subject to additional fees/penalties.
- Any package 96” or longer is subject to additional fees/penalties.
- Any package over 50 lbs is subject to additional fees/penalties.
- Never place a shipping label or packing list over a banded/strapped carton.
- Do not apply straps over the top of a shipping label’s barcode.
Step 1: Stack the cartons that are going to be banded together over the strap channel and under the arch on the strapping machine.
Step 2: To apply a strap, either press the green button on the right-hand side of the machine or press the foot lever down on the bottom of the machine.
Step 3: Apply the appropriate number of straps to each side of the bundle of cartons until all cartons are secured.
This completes the process of banding/strapping cartons.
